WORKING OUT WITH LEE
For most of my life, I never weighed myself. Never dieted. Only twice in my life have I needed to get back into shape. Once after my second baby, and then recently when my hip span started to exceed my age.
Mostly, I’ve been very active-doing yoga for 20 years, riding horseback, walking for transportation for 15 years, biking, and cross-country skiing. Still, after a certain age, that isn’t enough.
So I decided I had to work out with weights. After writing health journalism for nearly a decade and having served as Chatelaine’s health editor, I knew that was the best way for middle-aged women to stay in shape. I would have preferred to stay home and read, but I also know that mid-section body fat is NOT healthy for women of my age.
Lee was tasked to give me a workout I could do by myself.
And what a workout he gave me. He designed me the most effective efficient program–using crossfit principles. After a few months, he gave me another workout. He taught me how to workout well, keeping my heart rate up between sets. The main point is the exercises are full body-involving the major muscle groups. If he had me doing bicep curls with 10 lb weights, I would have never made such great progress.
I did the workout twice a week for 3 months, adding 4 hours of various cardio a week. I also did the South Beach diet for a couple of weeks and cut out most breads, carbs, sweets.
I lost 15 lbs (from 160 to 145) and went down two dress sizes. I’m able to maintain now with one workout a week plus ashtanga yoga or 1-2 hours of cardio exercise of my choosing. If I keep my weight each month, I get a massage.
I suggest you try whatever Lee is offering!

I had been struggling to reach my maximum potential athletically in basketball. I’d always worked hard in the gym doing exercises that were traditional and those that were suggested by friends, but only received limited results. Thanks to your advice and knowledge of crossfit training and plyometrics I am lighter faster and stronger than ever before. Over the past 3 months Lee has helped me increase my vertical leap 10 full inches I am now able to dunk a regulation 10-foot basketball net with ease. Lee showed me different exercises that engage specific muscles for jumping and explosiveness that allowed me to burst through a very difficult training plateau. I am currently 6 feet tall and 172 pounds, with Lees advice and guidance not only have I lost 10 pounds I am much stronger and I’m in the best shape of my life.
Thanks a lot,

The summer meltdown has truly rejuvenated my life. I never had much self confidence in the past. Even though I was very athletic and played many sports, I always felt huskier and heavier in comparison to my team mates. Being shadowed by my bone skinnysisters did not help either. Instantly after I started the diet plan, the negative views about myself gradually changed. I not only became as thin as my sisters, I developed more muscle mass on my body that I did not know existed . Now after these three months, I realized that the most important aspect of this competition was learning how to eat right. Finally, at twenty years old I feel more happy and confident about myself and my future. I would like to give a special thanks to Lee. Without his recommendation to join the competition, Jack and I would not have experienced all this.

I’ve always been one to push myself. Ever since I was young I’ve been pretty successful with sports. But recently I lost my passion for sports and kind of stopped exercising completely. After a while I started to put on weight which is odd because I’ ve always been very thin. I started losing confidence because of the lifestyle I was developing. So I took action and began to work out again. I was going almost daily and really pushing myself but the weight wouldn’t leave. I began to become very frustrated, and began to look for answers, dieting instantly came to mind. I didn’t know the first thing about dieting but luckily I was approached and was told about the Summer Meltdown competition. I immediately jumped on the opportunity and with good reason because within days of the competition I began to drop pounds. The more weight I dropped the more driven I became and the more confidence I gained. I also for the first time found out what it’s like to eat properly. In a nut shell I couldn’t be happier with the results of the diet and am glad I had a chance to be a part of it. Also I want to give a special thanks to Lee for recommending the competition and all the help he gave me throughout.

Lee- Testimonial
I have been a spinning instructor for over 5 years and I have seen a number of personal trainers at the various clubs where I have taught, but I can confidently say that no trainer compares to Lee. I began training with Lee in August 2007, after I had returned from a European expedition that left me with new world visions and 15 pounds. I knew I needed to lose the weight, and I knew I wanted to lose weight, but I was lacking the skill set required to translate my motivations into results. Throughout the days, a little voice in my head would remind me of my goals, making my weight all I could think about. As a result, my confidence plummeted and my self-esteem disappeared. Having a trainer is like having a little voice standing right beside you but, supporting you, encouraging you and pushing you. Lee took my focus off weight loss and onto physical gains, and wouldn’t you know it….the pounds have shed. The workouts are amazing and by no means boring, and Lee never misses an opportunity to challenge me at a level I never thought possible. Clean and jerks, pull- ups, dead lifts, sprints and thrusters are just some of the parts of a system of fitness training(crossfit) Lee has introduced me too. He has made my transition to this new style of exercise so easy and seamless, and much less intimidating then I originally thought. It has been almost a year that I have been with Lee and I was thrilled to be presented with the opportunity to tell my story. I am very fortunate to have Lee as my trainer, and I can say without reservation that I would recommend him highly to anyone, anyone looking to work with the best.

She was a 5′5″ tall 66 year-old woman who, in January 2008, weighed in at 197 lbs. She had retired 11 years ago from a stressful but satisfying career as a management accountant at McMaster University. At the time of her retirement, she was a smoker, weighed between 135 and 140 lbs and wore size 10-12 clothes. In retirement she stopped smoking, took on a couple of part-time jobs and pursued her love of travel. She also gained almost 60 lbs. and ballooned to wearing a size 16 (as long as the clothing was made of stretchable material). She refused to wear shorts or a skirt that didn’t fall way past her knees. In February 2008 the opportunity arose for a trip to Belize the following December. She had always wanted to visit Belize so she set a goal for herself: lose 50 lbs. in 50 weeks and increase her cardio capability so she could go snorkeling in Belize without having to wear a bathing suit that covered her from neck to ankles. To help reach her goal, she turned to MatureFit. Now, 10 weeks and 20 sessions later, she has lost 15 lbs. Her flexibility and strength have greatly improved. She has a long way to go with respect to her cardio capabilities (restricted by asthma) but she continues to work on that aspect and walks for 45 minutes on the days that she doesn’t go to MatureFit sessions. She finds that simple things like tying her shoes and placing items in low cupboards and drawers come much easier. She can reach her bum with her foot/stretch her own quads and her bra fits better. She is sleeping better than she has in a long time and she feels better and looks better which has increased her self-confidence. She has developed a strength and flexibility programme to follow at home. That ’she’ is me, Lynne Hopkinson, and I have only praise for the MatureFit programme by a young man named Lee who pushes me each week to do better. I never thought that I would look forward to physical exertion but I have learned to enjoy the sweat and tears that come from Lee’s word - “butt out, belly button in, shoulders back, elbows up, back straight, knees bent, head up, feet apart, squeeze, push, pull”. I hear the snorkeling in Belize waters is magnificent. I’ll bring back some photos.

I have always been a very active individual and have taken the healthy lifestyle very seriously. I had a period several months ago where I felt that my overall system was run down. I am very conscientious about my general well being and I knew that I did not feel as good as I should, that concerned me and I decided to do something about it. I knew Lee from Phoenix Fitness and learned he had a background in nutrition so I asked if he could give me some advice. We spent some time discussing how I felt and talked about my lifestyle and what and how I was meeting my nutritional needs. He asked me about my health concerns and discussed my health history and recommended some nutritional supplements and I decided to follow his advice. It did take several weeks but my overall endurance started to return to what it use to be and I felt myself feeling strong again. I just recently had a consultation with an iridologist , it was a good friend who recommended this, and it was interesting as she concurred that I had a strong constitution and must be taking care of my nutritional needs. She had very little to add to my nutritional regime that Lee had recommended and I feel that this confirms that the advise I recieved from Lee was spot on.

When looking for a trainer at my gym a year ago, I had no difficulty in choosing one. I had observed Lee training various clients, and the work-outs he provided seemed challenging and varied. His clients exercised hard, but at the same time seemed to be having fun. Lee was always very engaged in the process, encouraging and teaching throughout. He clearly enjoyed his work. This was exactly the type of trainer I needed, and so I signed up.
One year later, training with Lee continues to be one of the highlights of my week. I’ll admit to butterflies in my stomach on my trip to the gym, knowing that I will exercise harder than I would ever be able to on my own. But I love the feeling of accomplishment that comes after pushing beyond what is comfortable, of learning or mastering a new skill, of moving a heavier weight, doing an extra rep, or clocking a faster time, when training with Lee, gains such as this are continuous.
On my own, I would have never had considered attempting Olympic weight lifting and big moves such as squats and deadlifts and cleans. But Lee taught them to me by breaking complex lifts into simpler, more attainable steps, which we revisited and refined over time. Lee’s patience during this learning process was commendable.
One of Lee’s other strengths as a trainer is his careful attention to proper technique. His helpful suggestions and corrections maximize the benefits of each exercise, while at the same time ensuring safety.
He also posses knowledge in nutrition, an important consideration when improving one’s fitness and health. I have appreciated the valuable insights he has shared with me in this regard.
I would highly recommend Lee as a trainer to anyone. He is versatile, knowledgeable and motivating. Regardless of your fitness level or goals, he has the skills, personality and energy to help you surpass that for which you are striving.
